Remember, “a soft answer turneth away
wrath” (Prov.
15:1). When my
sweetheart and I were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, Elder Harold B. Lee gave
us wise counsel: “When you raise your voice in anger, the Spirit departs from
your home.” Elder Robert D.
Hales, Strengthening Families: Our Sacred Duty, April 1999 General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/1999/04/strengthening-families-our-sacred-duty?lang=eng
Encourage our
children’s private religious behavior, such as personal prayer, personal
scripture study, and fasting for specific needs. Measure their spiritual growth
by observing their demeanor, language, and conduct toward others. Pray daily with our children. Elder Robert D. Hales, Strengthening
Families: Our Sacred Duty, April 1999 General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/1999/04/strengthening-families-our-sacred-duty?lang=eng
By
careful practice, through the application of correct principles, and by being
sensitive to the feelings that come, you will gain spiritual guidance. Richard G. Scott, To Acquire Spiritual Guidance, October
2009 General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2009/10/to-acquire-spiritual-guidance?lang=eng
Father
in Heaven knew that you would face challenges and be required to make some
decisions that would be beyond your own ability to decide correctly. In His
plan of happiness, He included a provision for you to receive help with such
challenges and decisions during your mortal life. That assistance will come to
you through the Holy Ghost as spiritual guidance. It is a power, beyond your
own capability, that a loving Heavenly Father wants you to use consistently for
your peace and happiness. Richard G. Scott, To
Acquire Spiritual Guidance, October 2009 General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2009/10/to-acquire-spiritual-guidance?lang=eng
Faith must include trust. I am glad that each member of
the presidency stressed that fact in her talk. When we have faith in the Lord
Jesus Christ, we must have trust in him. We must trust him enough that we are
content to accept his will, knowing that he knows what is best for us. The kind of faith that includes trust in the Lord
stands in contrast to many imitations. Some people trust no one but themselves.
Some put their highest trust in a friend or another family member, perhaps because they feel that person is more
righteous or more wise than they. But that is not the Lord’s way. He told us to
put our faith and our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Dallin H. Oaks, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, April 1994
General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/1994/04/faith-in-the-lord-jesus-christ?lang=eng
Faith
in God and in His guidance through the Holy Spirit will sustain you in an
increasingly more challenging world. Richard G. Scott, The Sustaining Power of Faith in Times of
Uncertainty and Testing, April 2003 General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2003/04/the-sustaining-power-of-faith-in-times-of-uncertainty-and-testing?lang=eng
Even if you exercise your strongest
faith, God will not always reward you immediately according to your desires.
Rather, God will respond with what in His eternal plan is best for you. He
loves you to a depth and completeness you cannot conceive of in your mortal
state…Sincere faith gives understanding and strength to accept the will of our
Heavenly Father when it differs from our own. We can accept His will with peace
and assurance, confident that His infinite wisdom surpasses our own ability to
comprehend fully His plan as it unfolds a piece at a time.

God uses your faith to mold your
character. Character is the manifestation of what you are becoming. Strong
moral character results from consistent correct choices in the trials and
testing of life. Your faith can guide you to those correct choices. Clearly, it
is what you do and what you think about that determine what you are and what
you will become. Therefore, the choices you make need to be inspired by the
Lord.Richard G. Scott, The

A consistent, righteous life produces
an inner power and strength that can be permanently resistant to the eroding
influence of sin and transgression. Richard G. Scott, The Transforming Power
of Faith and Character, October 2010 General Conference, http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2010/10/the-transforming-power-of-faith-and-character?lang=eng
Wherever in life great spiritual
values await man’s appropriation, only faith can appropriate them. Man cannot
live without faith, because in life’s adventure the central problem is
character-building—which is not a product of logic, but of faith in ideals and
sacrificial devotion to them. Hugh B. Brown, October 1969 General
Conference p. 105
